About a month ago I pulled it out of mothballs and started to read it. I discovered that I truly loved this book and that I wanted to publish it the way I wanted. So, to make a long story short, I contacted my old editor, a guy I grew up with in Baltimore named Pete Heyrman, and he agreed to take a look at it. Pete confirmed what I thought- that the book had some real mojo. To make a long story short I am re-editing it with Pete and we are readying it for publication. I am about halfway through it and I’m having a ball. My plan is to get this thing out by the end of the year if possible.
During the interview, I asked Pete Best when and where Stu Sutcliff got his head kicked by some Teddy Boys, an injury that John always believed killed Stu a few years later. He gave the inside story which I included in the novel.
In RUBBER SOUL they meet a second-hand flea market vendor named Bobby Dingle (AKA Dust Bin Bob), a lad their own age who loves music as much as they do, but not being a musician, Dust Bin Bob can only help and point the Beatles in the right direction. Their adventures continue through the Hamburg years, the Cavern Club, and finally Beatlemania. The novel culminates with their incredibly scary (and true) experience in Manilla in the Phillipines. Brian Epstein believed that they would be assassinated in Manilla due to their shunning of the Marcos family. It almost happened when they were trying to get out of the country the next day at the airport where they were accosted and shoved around by officials of the Marcos government.
Based on true events, I laid the fictional story of Dust Bin Bob over the actual facts of the Beatles career. Dust Bin Bob tried to help the Beatles and winds up saving their lives in Manilla.
My plan is to publish it online first- iTunes, Amazon, eBooks, Digital Publishing, etc. After that we’ll actually press up some hardback copies to sell online, then I will record the audio book. I love listening to audiobooks and I look forward to making RUBBER SOUL come alive in your head. I’ll keep you updated on this as things progress. This is a completely unique novel that I hope you will enjoy someday soon. Wish me luck, there’s still a lot of work to do.
